Do you want to lose weight? Are you willing to give up all your favorite fatty foods all for the glory of having a slimmer, sexier body? Have you tried using any weight loss medication? How about orlistat? Have you tried using this weight reduction drug? Do you think you can still eat whatever you want as long as you are taking your orlistat regularly?

Orlistat is a weight loss medication that inhibits the function of pancreatic lipase, an enzyme that facilitates the absorption of fat in the intestinal wall. With regular use, most patients who use orlistat experience gastrointestinal symptoms, the most common of which include flatulence, oily spotting and inability to control defecation, with intake of fatty foods.

Weight loss is generally recommended for patients suffering from direct and indirect consequences of overweight and obesity.  Most common complications associated with increased weight include cardiovascular diseases, high cholesterol level, type 2 diabetes, certain types of cancer and sleep-related breathing disorders.

Weight loss is difficult to achieve for most overweight and obese patients. But it is much difficult to maintain weight loss because of faulty lifestyle practices.

Weight loss medications may aid in getting rid of some extra weight. After the disapproval of weight loss drug sibutramine, orlistat is the only prescribed weight reduction medication that overweight and obese individuals can use to aid them in their quest to trim some of their excess fats.

In a particular study published by the March 2011 issue of the Nutrition Journal, the use of orlistat was observed in a particular obese population who want to lose weight. The study subjects were given orlistat for a period of 1 year while trying to maintain their initial weight loss. During this observation period, study subjects  were given food frequency questionnaires to assess their dietary intake, their food choices and the energy density of the food groups they eat. And what did the scientists learn from this study? Most patients who initially lose weight with orlistat fail to maintain their healthy lifestyle within a period of 1 year. And this may be their stumbling block against their continuous journey to further weight loss.

So, do you think you can still lose weight with orlistat despite your unhealthy diet? The answer is “no.” Orlistat induces effective weight loss. However, without the aid of good dietary compliance, your efforts in taking orlistat will be less fruitful as expected.

Thus, if you are planning to effectively lose some weight and maintain that weight for the rest of your life, taking weight loss medications is not enough. It should include a healthy lifestyle with a healthy diet to have an effective, lifetime, weight loss and maintenance.
