WASHINGTON (AFP) – Research done at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston discovered findings that women who consumed more alcoholic beverages lost weight faster than those who didn’t.

More than 19,000 women aged 39 and above were asked about their alcoholic beverage consumption and tracked these women 13 years after. They found out that women who never drank a single drop increased weight faster, compared to those who regularly consumed alcohol. Regular and standard was measured at 14 grams of pure alcohol or a 5 oz glass of wine, 12 oz beer, or a 1.5 oz shot of an 80-proof alcohol.

A five-ounce (150 ml) glass of wine, 12-ounce beer or one mixed drink made with a single, 1.5-ounce shot of 80-proof alcohol all contain around 14 grams of pure alcohol and are considered “standard drink sizes” in the United States, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The drink that topped all weight loss results was red wine, followed by white wine, beer, and spirits, and the study concluded that there was indeed, and “inverse association between the risk of becoming overweight versus alcohol consumption”. Meaning that the higher and the more frequent the alcoholic beverage consumption, the most likely a woman can lose weight fast.

Though importantly the researchers warned against excessive drinking and that the research must never be used nor interpreted as a tool for faster and more effective weight loss. There still are medical and psycho-social problems associated with excessive alcohol intake, apart from the fact that high alcohol levels in the body can damage the liver.
