Herbal supplement containing Ma Huang-Guarana may be an effective method for losing weight, says a study conducted in Obesity Research Center, St Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center and Department of Medicine, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, New York and published in the March 2001 issue of the International Journal of Obesity.

In this study, sixty-seven obese individuals were chosen to randomly receive either the placebo or the herbal supplement that contains Ma Huang-Guarana for a period of eight weeks. Their body weights, anthropometric measurement, cardiovascular and metabolic status were taken at baseline and after the eight-week observation period.

What did the researchers learned through this clinical observation? The researchers learned that active treatment using the Ma Huang-Guarana containing herb supplements resulted in greater decreases in the hip circumference and serum triglyceride levels compared to those who took the placebo medications. Insomia, headache and some degree of mouth dryness were the most common adverse reactions associated with the intake of this herbal supplement.

Thus, the researchers recommend the further clinical investigations that can establish the effectiveness and safety of this herbal weight loss supplement in a larger population. Furthermore, long-term outcomes should also be investigated.
